Child Circumcision
A guide on the child circumcision procedure. Review the information below and if you are happy with the outlook of our service, you can book an initial consultation with Dr Kamrul Hasan to assess your child’s circumstances.
See below for more information on age groups.
- Fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission
Highly rated in child circumcision
Routine Consultations are not necessary for infant circumcisions. Unless any special circumstances exist. This may be if a child is chubby in the groin area as this can be a deciding factor whether circumcision can be undertaken safely. If a child has a complex medical history, we may also suggest a consultation in advance of the day of the procedure.
Before the procedure, all necessary information will be given to Parents, so they are armed with the relevant knowledge before arriving at the clinic.
Of course, if a Parent wants a Consultation in advance, we can arrange that.
Under 5 months
We often get asked when is the best time to undertake a circumcision.
If the baby and mother are both well enough to attend the clinic, you can proceed with the procedure soon after birth. However, there is no added advantage in trying to do the circumcision in the 1st 1-2 weeks after birth. Aiming for 3 weeks onwards is probably best.
If you are expecting a child soon, then please wait for the child to be born. Advanced booking is not necessary. The procedure involves a local anaesthetic (LA) injection and the Plastibell ring method is used to perform the procedure. After the LA infiltration, we wait 5-7 mins to ensure the LA has taken effect before proceeding to surgery, ensuring the child feels no pain during the procedure. The ring takes approximately 7-10 days to come off in babies under 12 months and then a further 2 weeks for complete healing. Follow-up appointments for babies under 12 months are not required. However, you can contact us 24/7 for advice and we will give you our contact details.
Those who have the Plastibell procedure will be provided with a topical numbing agent that comes in the form of a gel in a syringe to apply on the Penis after surgery. This helps with pain management. We offer two syringes to each baby as complimentary. Additional gels can be purchased if desired.
Children over the age of two months or above 3.5 kg in weight can take oral Paracetamol and those over the age of 3 months can take both Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.
Total healing time is approximately 3 weeks. All aftercare instructions will be explained thoroughly and repeatedly and be given in writing. ALL our patients will receive a COPY of the CONSENT that they sign to provide a fully transparent service (many clinics DO NOT do this).
6-11 months
Babies in this age group can be quite active, hence it is important to have enough support staff to ensure these procedures are conducted safely. You can rest assure that
our clinic has all the necessary requirements to conduct these procedures safely.

We do not offer sedation or general anaesthetic. If this is something you want, you will have to make enquiries at a private hospital. I have to advise you and also warn you that this is a challenging age group to conduct a Circumcision on under a local anaesthetic. They usually require a lot more support compared to other age groups. Fortunately, in our clinic, we make sure that enough support staff are present to ensure the procedure is conducted as safely as is possible.
Those who have the Plastibell procedure will be provided with numbing Gel as complimentary to apply on the Penis after surgery. This helps with pain management. In this age group, it is recommended also to give them oral Paracetamol and Ibuprofen for the first 48 hours.
We also cover them with a one-week course of antibiotics to reduce the chances of an infection developing. A private prescription will be issued that you will need to take to
Pharmacy.
Total healing time is approximately 3 weeks. All aftercare instructions will be given both as a short video and in writing. We will also go through a full Consenting process prior to the procedure and give you a COPY of the CONSENT form for your records.
We DO NOT offer a Home Visit Service and DO NOT recommend in any circumstances you undertake a surgical procedure at home with its attendant risks plus the lack of accountability of those who do Home Visits – if something goes wrong, you will not find them.
A full-time NHS Surgeon will perform the Procedure. Our clinic is the only Clinic in East London that will guarantee you that a Surgeon will carry out the Procedure. We run a fully transparent service and it is by far one of the safest practices in London as rated by the CQC.
Parents are allowed in the Treatment Room during the Procedure. However, our sincere advice is you choose a Centre such as ours where a Trained Surgeon with several Years of experience will take Care of your Child and make sure that you as Parents get the best experience possible.
Importantly, we are registered and regulated by several Governing bodies, and this ensures that your child will be in a safe and secure environment.
You will receive a Professional Service at a very affordable price, and you will not be disappointed with the service. But please remember that in order to provide such a quality service we have huge overheads to pay for. We have done our level best to keep prices reasonable.

Procedures in this age group are conducted in a very compassionate and kind manner such that the child is not frightened by their surroundings and strangers. The child will not see any part of the anaesthetic process or procedure.
Parents are encouraged to be nearby but do not have to watch the procedure. This gives the child the added strength and support that they need. Plenty of our own staff will be at hand to make sure everything goes smoothly.

10-15 years
Our clinic offers the latest technology in the practice of Circumcision. We offer the Stapling Device for this age group – this offers the neatest and most cosmetically appealing Circumcision. No other clinic in East London offers this device for circumcision in older children.
The stapling device may not be suitable for all patients and this decision will be made on the day following the examination. The staples usually fall off at the 3–4-week period post-operatively.
Fees may be higher if any complicating factor is involved such as Phimosis or Balanitis or any other health or weight issues that may impact the procedure. The procedure is carried out under a Local Anaesthetic. The procedure is painless and is over within a few minutes. Once the procedure is complete you can put on your normal clothes and walk normally.
Procedures for children
Plastibell Technique
The Plastibell device is used as our 1st choice device for infant circumcisions. We have a 20 Year history of using this device with minimal to no complications. We are in a unique position where we stock larger size rings for the older child that other clinics will often not stock.
Circumplast
A relatively new device with little track or no track record. The range of sizes available is very limited and does not offer the full range of sizes to undertake safe circumcisions in this age group. The manufacturers of this device make strong claims about this device but these are not borne out in my experience who has been undertaking high-volume circumcisions for nearly 20 years. We, therefore, do not offer this technique. For older children, we have the Stapling device which is now the GOLD standard for that age group.
