Adult Circumcision - Shangring technique
Harley Medical offers the Shang Ring technique upon request. The Shangring
consists of two halves that are hinged together at one end with a ratchet
closure. Hemostasis is achieved by pressure applied by the interlocking rings
which tamponades any bleeding. Sutures are not required. But the device must
be kept on for 1-2 weeks and then manually removed.
- Fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission
A cost-effective method
A device that was developed so that non-medical/surgical personal can undertake a circumcision in areas with poor medical provisions. There is a lot of online information that is misleading about this device regarding its use. We generally DO NOT encourage adults to use this device as although the procedure may be relatively straightforward, it gives rise to a lot of post-procedure problems. However, we do stock the device and if anyone is adamant they want this device we can cater for them.
While there are some potential drawbacks to this technique, it is generally considered to be a safe and effective method for circumcision. As with any surgical procedure, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits of this technique with your healthcare provider before undergoing the procedure.
Pro's of the Shangring technique
- Little or no surgical skill is required to perform a procedure using the Shang Ring (this should alert the patient that it probably isn’t the best choice of device for circumcision).
- No sutures required.
Con's of the Shangring technique
- You are stuck with a rigid device around your penis for 1-2 weeks.
- This can cause a lot of discomfort, especially during erections.
- Higher risk of wound dehiscence, especially whilst the ring is removed at 1-2 weeks.
- A 2nd visit to the clinic is necessary to have the ring removed.
- Removal of the ring can be very uncomfortable.
- This can potentially leave a wide unsightly scar.
Procedures for adults
Adult Stapling Device
The GOLD standard of Circumcision procedures. The Adult Stapling Device simplifies the operation, with a short operating time and less surgical trauma to the area. This is a very safe and easy application, leaving a tidy cut with minimal scarring. The staples used fall off on their own without the need of revisiting the surgery.
Glue Technique (with fast dissolving sutures)
The Freehand Method of circumcision or sleeve resection is what is generally offered in the NHS for Adult Circumcisions. It involves excising the foreskin either freehand or using a clamp technique followed by bringing the edges of the inner and outer foreskin together with sutures (+/- glue).
Adult Shangring
A single-use, disposable device that consists of two concentric plastic rings. Once applied it stays on for 1-2 weeks and then must be physically removed. It is not our 1st choice device for adult circumcisions. There are more disadvantages than advantages to this device and many patients who have used this device have said they would not recommend anyone using this device.
